We are trying a new schedule this year and making a hotel adjustment, so please read carefully!
Our annual pilgrimage to Winter Haven is on once again this year, with a slight
adjustment in schedule. Two factors have led to this change.
First, the alternate program has become entertaining and interesting enough to
tempt many of you beyond the spouses... several pilots have expressed a desire
to be part of that alternate event.
Secondly, we've heard from several Florida Flyers that it's difficult to come
to a Monday flyin.
So, as a test this year, we're moving the CFO flyin to Sunday. The Monday local
trip will be expanded to include a larger number of attendees. We will still
be having a pre-event icebreaker at Faye and Palmer's house, on Saturday night.
Your experience with this new schedule will be of great interest. We will adjust
for the future based on how things work out this year.
The event starts on Saturday evening with a reception at the home of our gracious
hosts, Faye and Palmer Gehring. They will again open their home for us to enjoy
in the company of our CFO friends. From there we will carpool to the hotel where
we have a block of rooms reserved.
The airport event starts promptly the next morning (Sunday.) The agenda includes
a group review of the many dozens of Cardinals on the field, as late arrivals
trickle in. We will look for unique details, impressive paint, clever solutions
and outstanding panels. The walkaround will be followed by a delicious BBQ lunch
and after-lunch discussion in the grove.
Sunday evening dinner is at the Sea Flame restaurant, where we have had a pleasant
time with excellent food in past years. We will have a room to ourselves. We will have
a choice of a 9 oz.
sirloin strip, chicken breast with mushrooms or Boston Scrod, with baked potato,
salad bar, and soup. The beef and fish will cost $12.95, the chicken $11.95, plus
drinks and tip.
The dinner is Dutch Treat, although we will be collecting reservations during
your online registration and verifying the count when you arrive at the flyin.
Directions to the restaurant can be found below. If you don't have a car, ask
around, usually there are plenty of cars and we'll work something out.
Monday we will gather for a group field trip to Lakeridge Winery
and lunch at the Mission Inn Resort. We expect to have a bus and
pick up at the hotel first, then the airport. That should let us interact as
a group and also enjoy our wine tasting without concern. There will be a charge
for the Monday event, currently being finalized.
Through the rest of the week we'll all hang with the CFO group at the hotel,
local restaurants and at Sun 'n Fun. Winter Haven is a great base for seeing
Sun 'n Fun, with far smaller crowds and better prices in exchange for a short
drive. Keep your rental car or pair up with other CFO members and see the show
with your Cardinal friends!
Throughout the event there will be plenty of opportunities to ogle over Cardinals
and talk with their owners in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, some tech talk
and generally good fun in the Florida sun. Read on for the detailed logistics
and agenda.
Preflight Checklist:
- 1) Register Now. Make sure you register for the event so we can have food for you!
The price goes up the week before the event, as our costs go up for
late reservations.
- 2) Hotel. We are moving across the parking lot
to the new Holiday Inn, owned by the same owners as the Hampton we
have used in the past. Call the Winter Haven Holiday Inn on Cypress
at 1-863-292-2100 and reserve your room from the Cardinal Flyers room block. There
is more hotel information at this page.
- 3) Rental Car. Reserve your car from Hertz at 863-298-0651
during business hours in Florida (8:00-6:00 Eastern). Again be sure
to ask for the CFO rate, we're getting a good rate this year. More
rental car info on this page.
- 4) Be Patient, prepare your airplane and wait until April 5 to fly to Winter Haven.
- 5) Walk or drive over to Palmer's house from the airport for the evening social event, which starts at 6:30.
- 4) Enjoy! We'll be glad to see you!

Please plan to volunteer to help! Please sign up below to handle a task for a short while so everyone will be able to enjoy the day. Poor Palmer always spends the whole time handling all the little things, and is amazed to look up and find the day over. Let's pitch in and let Faye and Palmer relax a little more this year.
We especially need people to handle parking airplanes. This is a lot of fun but only for an hour or so... please sign up for an hour and help carry the load.
We also need someone to take pictures of each airplane, and hopefully a
few overall shots. We've had some excellent photographers step up in the
past, anyone up to the task this year?
We have had a table at the type club tent at Sun 'n Fun which has become
increasingly popular since we started in 2000. People drop by for a short
rest, a little chat and to compare notes on what we've been seeing. Keith
and Paul will have a schedule so you can catch them at the table, and we
hope several of you will volunteer to 'hold down the chairs' for a two hour
block so we in CFO can see the show too. Please add your name to the list
and we'll work out a schedule.

We are also doing another Cardinal forum presentation, scheduled again this year for Wednesday morning. We always enjoy a good showing at that forum, and they do take attendance to see if anyone is interested in the subject of Cardinals and Cardinal maintenance.

To help you find things here are a few maps:
The flyin costs are being determined.
Similar to prior years there will be a lasting artifact from the event for
each registered guest.
There is plenty of airplane parking at the airport. On flyin day a CFO follow-me cart will meet you as you turn off the runway, or we'll talk to you on the radio. Worst case it will be hard to miss 50-plus Cardinals on the grounds.
Palmer hopes to work out a discount on fuel for CFO members at Winter Haven.
The price will be updated when the time gets closer.
