Winter Haven, FL Regional CFO Flyin
20th Annual Winter Haven CFO Flyin

Winter Haven, FL (GIF)

Saturday-Monday, March 30 - April 1, 2019
(The weekend before Sun 'n Fun Flyin)

To register for this event, Click Here

The Cardinal Flyers will gather again at Winter Haven, enjoying the presence of excellent aircraft and the company of our CFO family the weekend before Sun 'n Fun in nearby Lakeland.

This will be a very important year in two ways. First, it will be a celebration of the life and spirit of Palmer Gehring, who passed away unexpectedly just after last year's event.

Secondly, this will be the 20th year that the Gehrings have hosted us at their home. Make your plans now to join us to celebrate both the memories and the milestone.

Some things will change this year, thank you for your patience through this transition.

The event starts on Saturday evening with a reception at the Gehring home. We will be enjoying light hors d'oeuvres and beverages, catching up with friends new and old.

We were honored to learn that several of our sponsors have gotten together to sponsor this event. The initial note from Jim Shafer from Powerflow said it very well:

In tribute to Palmer, Faye Gehring would like to host one final event for the group at the home she & Palmer shared. As this is likely the last such event for her, she would also like to make it a “No Charge” event for CFO Members. This represents an excellent opportunity for those of us who have consistently benefitted from our association with the group to demonstrate our support and solidify our reputation as reliable partners.

Thanks to the efforts of Powerflow, Scheme Designers and others still in process, this part of the event will be no charge to the membership. We all appreciate their thoughtfulness and support.

As part of our event we will be presenting a lasting memorial recognizing Palmer and his contributions. There will be an opportunity in the registration page for those who knew Palmer and wish to participate in this remembrance.

After the reception we will carpool to the hotel (rent a car or make a friend!) where we have a block of rooms reserved.

The airport fly-in portion of the event kicks off on Sunday morning. The agenda includes a group review of the many dozens of Cardinals on the field. We will look for unique details, impressive paint, clever solutions and outstanding panels. The walkaround will be followed by a delicious BBQ lunch and an after-lunch discussion in the grove.

The awards banquet will be on Sunday evening, after the airport day. The awards dinner will be at Tanner's Lakeside (1006 Lake Howard Dr SW, Winter Haven, FL). It is always a great time, with good food, discussion and of course the presentation of awards, including the coveted People's Choice Best Cardinal of Show.

Our Monday field trip this year will include both aviation and Florida experiences. We will visit Warbird Adventures in Kissimmee to see their collection of warbirds and maintenance areas, seeing what they have collected and how they keep them running while offering warbird rides to the public. We'll be there long enough for one or two folks to schedule a warbird flight if you are so inclined.

We will also visit Gator Land to experience some local Florida flora and fauna, including birds, turtles, wild cats and of course alligators and crocodiles in something close to their natural habitat.

Monday evening we will gather at the Outback next to the hotels for an off-the-menu dutch treat dinner.

Throughout the event there will be plenty of opportunities to oogle over Cardinals and talk with their owners in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, share tech talk and generally have good fun in the Florida sun. Read on for the detailed logistics and agenda.

For the rest of the week many of us will stay with the CFO group at the hotel, local restaurants and at Sun 'n Fun. Winter Haven is a great base for seeing Sun 'n Fun, with far smaller crowds and better prices in exchange for a short drive. Ride the Winter Haven airport shuttle, keep your rental car or pair up with other CFO members and see the show with your Cardinal friends.

Join us for the Cardinal Forum on Wednesday at 10:00 in the forum building, check signs for the meeting room. The initial schedule has us in room Forum 4 on the second floor.

We will also be meeting at 2:30 each day at the booth of a chosen CFO sponsor. We plan to be at one exhibitor building each day (Building A on Tuesday through D on Friday.) There will be a sign posted at the location each day so you can scope it out in advance each day. More details will be available.

The Winter Haven Airport continues to be a great help to us in these events, so please make an effort to support them as much as possible.

The airport will be selling Sun 'n Fun access wrist bands and will have a shuttle to the SnF grounds from their terminal. Several of our folks used the shuttle in past years and reported it to be a great way to enter the grounds, avoiding the cost and walking required when parking, not to mention the mud, dust or smoke (depending on which we'll get this year). The airport has also offered under the wing camping during Sun 'n Fun in past years. Here is a link that will show the services they are offering for Sun 'n Fun this year.

Preflight Checklist:

  • 1) Register Please register for the event so we will have food for you! The price goes up the week before the event, as our costs go up for late reservations.

  • 2) Hotel. Reserve ASAP, as the hotels are always busy. Our room block will be released on March 11th and may fill up before then.

CFO has reserved a block of rooms at both the Holiday Inn and the Hampton. Both hotels are owned by the same owner and share a parking lot. The Hampton was completely remodeled in 2017 and the Holiday Inn underwent a partial remodel in 2018. Our group hotel rate is the same at both hotels: $119.00 plus tax including breakfast.

You can book the Winter Haven Holiday Inn on line or call them at 1-863-292-2100. Use group code CAR for the Holiday Inn.

You can book the Hampton Inn on line or call 1-863-299-9251. Use group code CFA for the Hampton. If you wish to have a room configuration different than 2 queen beds, please call the Winter Haven Hampton directly. They will accommodate those requests as available.

There is a chance that you may have access to a special corporate or other rate for either of these hotels which would be lower, feel free to give it a try.

  • 3) Rental Car. CFO has made arrangements with Hertz for a special price and will bring our cars to the grove so they will be right there for your pickup.

You must reserve your car through the local office for this service. If you work with an online or national registration you may need to get a ride somewhere else to pick up your car.

If you happen to be a gold card member let them know, as it helps them have enough cars waiting. They can also help you become a gold card member for your future travel needs, this will let Hertz stage cars for you at other airports as well.

Reserve your car from Hertz at 863-298-0651 during business hours in Florida (8:00AM-6:00PM Eastern). Be sure to ask for the CFO rate using CDP number: 1499515.

If you prefer to rent from Enterprise, there is an Enterprise agent at the terminal on the other side of the field. Be sure to check about extra relocation charges and such details.

Please plan to volunteer to help! Please click on a timeslot to sign up below to handle a task for a short while so everyone will be able to enjoy the day. There are always many other tasks which need doing, and we greatly appreciate all who pitch in to help where they can.

We especially need people to handle parking airplanes. This is a lot of fun but only for an hour or so... please sign up for an hour and help carry the load.

We also need someone to take pictures of each airplane, and hopefully a few overall shots. We've had some excellent photographers step up in the past, anyone up to the task this year?

We will be doing a Cardinal forum presentation at the Sun 'n Fun event, scheduled again this year for the same time as last year: Wednesday morning at 10:00 AM. We always enjoy a good showing at that forum, and they do take attendance to see if anyone is interested in the subject of Cardinals and Cardinal maintenance. So please plan on joining us! It will be in the blue vocational school building, look for the schedule at the door to know which room. The initial schedule has us in room Forum 4 on the second floor.

More details: To help you find things here are a few maps and details: There is plenty of airplane parking at the airport. On flyin day a CFO follow-me cart will meet you as you turn off the runway, or we'll talk to you on the radio. Worst case it will be hard to miss 40-plus Cardinals on the grounds.

There will be a discount on fuel for CFO members at Winter Haven. The price will be updated when the time gets closer.

We had a great time in past years, check out past reports from 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002, 2001 or 2000 events
