Sky-Tec
FLYWEIGHTTM STARTERS

What gets your Cardinal going? If it's an old-fashioned Prestolite starter you're missing out. Let's count the reasons why you might want a Sky-Tec High-torque Inline starter instead:

  • Quicker starts. Up to 210 RPM on 24V and 120+ RPM on 12V Cardinals - compare to 80 RPM on the BEST of days for a heavy Kelly/Prestolite starter! And remember, your impulse couplers hang in to about 400 RPM so don't worry about it being "too fast" - there's no such thing!
  • Improve Hot Start Problems. Let's face it, our IO-360's can be finicky. But pull air and fuel through the engine more quickly and your hot start problems will fade away.
  • Save your Battery. The greater efficiency of the Sky-Tec starter will bring more blades of cranking from your battery capacity, especially useful on cold starts.
  • Save some weight! The Sky-Tec starter is 9 lbs lighter than the stock Prestolite starter, saving weight in an important part of the airplane. This is useful on all Cardinals, essential for those adding a turbocharger or three blade prop.

    Frequently asked questions:

    • Will I have to modify my baffling?
    • No. No modifications are required. It’s a bolt-off/bolt-on replacement.

    • Does it require an STC?
No. Every Sky-Tec starter is a PMA certified replacement part. No STC paperwork is required.

    • How long will it take to install?
As long as it takes to remove your cowling and your old starter and reinstall the new and the cowl. For most Cardinals this is about a 2 hour job for your mechanic, as the alternator needs to be removed in order to take off the baffles around the starter.

    • Can it spin so fast it turns off the magneto impulse?
No. The fastest a Sky-Tec starter has been known to spin is 210 RPM. Most impulse couplers are set to kick out at 400 RPM. Besides, even if it spun faster than the impulse coupler kick-out speed, would you even need an impulse coupler? In effect, there really isn’t any such thing as “too fast.” Faster is better.

    • Do I need to upgrade my cables?
No. In most cases, the NL starter is more efficient than the original Prestolite and draws less current through the cables.

    • How long will a Sky-Tec starter last?
Sky-Tec starters are designed to exceed engine TBO.

    • What maintenance should I perform on the Sky-Tec starter?
None. Just use it. Go fly!

    • Wait a second. Nothing’s this easy/good. What if it breaks?
Sky-Tec support is second to none in the industry. Sky-Tec stands behind ALL of their starters with a 2-year factory warranty and should it ever be needed, repairs are downright cheap by aviation standards.
