Hawthorne CFO Flyin
Stu Aplin sends these pictures and the story of the
CFO fly in held in Hawthorne, California.

Cars (Steve) would have won the greatest distance FHR-HHR (doesn't look
very far from F to H does it?) Seattle to LA! but had wx problems that
turned him back. Steve still gets a cardinal dash card for his attempt!
Cory and Paula N52193 flew in from Prescott, Az., but withdrew their
distance claim because they are actually based out of Chino Ca, 30 miles
that Don Knechtel (HHR airport manager) designed especially for our
event.
The best maintained aircraft placard was awarded to Mike Berger
N55HS from SBP. Don did a great job on the awards, which included an HHR
gold-lettered coffee mug for all attendees. We gave away 25 mugs to 12
airplanes.
Reda will get a dash card also; that aircraft arrived while
we were on an airport tour, so we regrettably missed it for the photo
shoot and at chow time. There were no 68 & 69's. All age groups were
represented and the party was small enough that everyone could get to
know each other. I must say it was great!
We walked around each others aircraft and asked and answered questions.
Here's what some of us learned:
-tail handles were an option on all cardinals (kind of a nice one too!)
-replacement (new) wing tips shipped from cessna come pre drilled for
the extra little clamp for the fuel drain that the 78's have
-Paul removed his cowl (finally saw the quick release screws) and showed
us all his turbo and explained how it worked
-Paul now has of a set of 'surplus' magnehelic gauges and hoses for
airflow measurements
-proper noise abatement departure procedure for HHR, and rules to follow
for the Los Angeles Special Flight Rules corridor
-there is room for a second set of circuit breakers under the existing
ones for extra added equipment, some of which can be added with just a
log book entry
-composite spinners are the way to go when the time comes
-lots of questions about seats and comfort so I guess that is a priority
to be noted at reupholstery time
I received many compliments about our tower controllers, so they earned
a placard and mug also.
Everyone claimed to have a good time so Michele and Stu Aplin will be
offering to host the Second Annual Hawthorne Airport Cardinal Fly-in
next year!
