Winter Haven National flyin 2005
This may have been the ultimate year at Winter Haven. It is hard to imagine the event coming off any more perfectly. Many things came together to make it a memorable event.
The weather was perfect: cool, sunny and calm, just enough breeze to make the Cardinals land right in front of us, along with that one 182 doing T&G's that we pegged 'submarine landings.' (Dive! Dive!)
Folks came early. We had over 40 people registered by the night before the event, which made event day go more quickly for everyone. This was the view on arrival quite early on Monday.
With only a little challenge finding the very busy rental car guy, we got good cars at great prices. Hertz earned our business this year, and all things considered they did a nice job.
Great crowd for the icebreaker. Faye and Palmer continue to astound with their hospitality, as they host dozens of Flyers in their home the night before. The caterers are old friends who really do up the event, and truly enjoy the group. With lots of catching up to do and many near stories to hear, its lucky any of us can tear ourselves away to prepare for the next day.
The hotel was excellent as always, with WIFI in the lobby to go with the eggs and sausage for breakfast. It was really fun to ride up the elevator with CFO folks, have breakfast with CFO folks and so on. One of the few other hotel guests stopped us to ask what all those hats were!
We filled up the parking area for the flyin, and had Cardinals coming and going all day. As a result not every airplane made it to the pictorial below. I think we could put packed a few more onto the field, but this was a very workable number of airplanes in attendance.
It happened again... a Cardinal arrived and was vectored to the Follow Me cart, parked with the group and stepped out to ask the greeter 'What's going on here?' Yes, they had no idea about the CFO flyin, but joined us and had a great time.
Another occurrence we've seen in the past is the arrival, under cover of darkness, of a non-Cardinal in our pristine parking area. Palmer spend no extra time discussing this issue and promptly transported the offender to a more suitable parking area. That Palmer, always working to improve things!
The volunteers were really great! Perhaps it was our handy signup system, perhaps just excellence on the part of the volunteers, but the jobs which needed doing got done with a minimum of discussion. You stepped up, you made it happen. Thanks!
The walkaround was impressive! A number of very nice Cardinals attended this event, making the voting for 'best Cardinal' more difficult than ever. There were new paint jobs, interior jobs an avionics suites. It is truly inspiring to see what folks are doing with their airplanes.
Lunch was tasty, varies, done to a turn, as warm as you'd like it and we had enough food! It was already an excellent meal, even before they brought out the cookies!
We had a few door prizes this year, given out by picking random numbers which aligned to attendees. You had to be present to win! One of the winners was our wandering couple who accidentally found the flyin, hopefully completing their enjoyment of the day!
Then it was time for the more serious awards, which brought three honoree's this year:
The Flew Furthest award went to Vince Kreizinger, who flew out from Long Beach to be with us. We had a few visitors from further away, including Vince Endter from San Jose and Sam from Nicaragua, but Vince K brought his airplane and flew away with the award.
A new category, the Fledgling award, went to Bill Cadiz, just 6 weeks into Cardinal ownership.
Finally the grand prize: Best Of Show, the People Choice for Best Cardinal. This was a tight race, with Jimmy Honeycutt, Tom Saxon and Tom Chasteen, all making very strong showings in the voting. But in the end the winner was Palmer and Faye Gehring's excellent FG, sporting new paint and a spotless interior. A well deserved prize, and the standards are clearly rising. Congratulations, Palmer!
As always, past champions get special parking up front, so there is more to this award than just bragging rights!
The technical talk was new and improved this year. We talk so much between ourselves, every day, that we invited a few more vendors to share their stories at the flyin. As a result we had visits from Airwolf, the filter and vacuum people, Powerflow and Plane Plastics.
Airwolf talked about the introduction of the wet vacuum pump, as well as the return of the Walker oil separator to the market. It was interesting to hear John's perspective on why one type of oil sep is better than the other... he has strong opinions but they are based in fact.. just the way we like our opinions served.
Powerflow made a big announcement at our flyin: The Certified Short Stack! Yes, now you can enjoy the performance increase of a Powerflow system without the external pipe. That eases cowl removal, installation and makes it slightly quieter inside, with a slight reduction in total performance. Powerflow has been listening! Here Darren is holding their new short stack, which fits completely within
Plane Plastics announced that they will be reworking the Cardinal line of parts later this fall, converting from the old style approximate parts to the newer technology exact parts. We're looking forward to the reduction in installation effort which will result from that update.
John Summerford shared his tale of woe, starting with hurricanes, moving through repairs and fires and missing parts, but ending with the most ideal of outcomes: his airplane was at the flyin! It was headed in for paint, soon to show no sign of this challenging year. Excellent job on the airplane, and a great story John.
While we chatted, the spouses enjoyed a cooking lesson from Chef Todd. He shared his secrets for special salads and other creations, and his overall flair for making simple foods look and taste good.
Our afternoon discussions ended with an open forum, which led to discussions on a number of subjects of general interest. It was a very relaxed discussion with good friends, just the way we like them.
After a short dip in the pool (at least for those of use for whom it is a treat) we met again at the Sea Flame for an excellent meal and some one on one debriefing. It was a nice chance to get to know each other a little better and spend some time with old friends.
As the week progressed most folks dropped by the Sun n Fun Type club tent, and several did us the very much appreciated favor of staffing the table for while. As a result, Debbie got to see some of the show this year, and a significant number of Cardinal owners got to meet us and other CFO members for the first time. It is amazing to us that any Cardinal owner might no know about us, but it does happen!
The Cardinal Forum was held at the now usual Wednesday Morning time, in the new forum location. It was well attended with prospective Cardinal owners, with a smattering of current owners to help me tell the story. It was great fun to let Sandy Honeycutt answer the question about initial training challenges from the earnest young student pilot... I think she convinced him it could be done!
Sun 'n Fun is a good show for Cardinals, we seem to make good connections there which help us later in the year. You'll be hearing more about the opportunities we were able to find for Cardinal Flyers.. pretty exciting stuff!
A special thanks to Palmer and Faye Gehring, who continue to make this event possible with their hard work and good taste. Thanks also to Al Van Lengen, Dick Almay, and Debbie, who took these pictures of the event.
Several things follow below: First, a chance to leave both public and private feedback on this event. Secondly, pictures of the aircraft in attendance, and finally the list of people who signed up to attend.

| We had a great time; thanks to all who attended and especially those who helped make it a success. Keith and Debbie Peterson. |
This was our second Winter Haven flyin; the first with our own airplane. Wish we could have stayed for the full two days; maybe next time. This will be our third year as CFO members and we look forward to continue being thoroughly satisfied members as long as we own a Cardinal and can enjoy aviation. Keith; Paul; Debbie; Guy and all the great CFO people do a really good job on these flyins; and with the organization in general. It should be obvious to all that there's a lot of work and time involved. Oh; and thanks for the great plaque. Fledgling; indeed! See you all soon. Bill and Mary Cadiz; Eustis; Fl. |
Our first time of attending a CFO gathering and well worth the long trip from the UK. Amazing group of people; from all over the US. Made a number of new aquaintances and had our first flight in a Cardinal (albeit only 8 miles to Bartow) with John Summerford. Alan & Jenny Powell - London - England |
