Subject: Hamm Fly-in
I wanted to express our appreciation for the wonderful job that
Hans-Peter and the rest of the gang at Hamm Aeroclub did in making us
welcome at the Hamm flyin.
A nice young lady welcomed all flyers with some schnapps before
airplanes even were vacated! Attendance was higher than originally
apparent at around 10 airplanes I believe, despite the weather, but I
stand to be corrected on this!
We had a wonderful (if wet) time, and for us it was the first CFO
meeting.
I had a chance to present my European Cardinal Mods database project (to
avoid outrageous Euro-certification costs), as well as our trip of last
year to 80 degrees North in Spitsbergen, after the tracks of Amundsen
and Nobile's polar expeditions. It can't have been so boring as only one
of the attendants fell asleep, and it just showed yet once more how
amazing our Cardinals are.
Apparently, the subsequent party lasted until early AM...but I was
asleep by midnight, as our little 2 year old Maria had (and was going
to) wake us up early.
The Belgians only came on Saturday, as they had to be back home for the
Euro Parliament elections on Sunday. It is apparently mandatory there,
or you risk a fine! We just voted by mail the prior week.
The weather did not collaborate at all. Even though the previous and
subsequent weeks Germany has enjoyed excellent weather, a Low in the
area of the British Isles (where else?) was driving front after front
with low cloud and rain across central Europe throughout the weekend.
We somehow managed to dodge it, first under the front that we could not
outclimb in ice, then over the clouds at FL160, and return safely to
Mallorca for a long one stop trip via Clermont Ferrand in 40 KTS
headwinds, meaning we landed IFR late at night back home.
Surprisingly, little Maria withstood the 8 hrs trip with flying colors,
courtesy of some good humour from my wonderful wife and the
quintessential portable DVD player.
Thanks a lot to Hans Peter and Hamm Aeroclub, and thanks to all
Cardinaleers for being a great gang!
